While it seems like supercars are the ones dominating the Frankfurt Motor Show, Honda had recently revealed something that we have been waiting for all these time. Opening up during a press conference is a fresh batch of details for their upcoming 2015 Civic Type-R, a batch of photos of the engineering prototype as well as a video of the next hot hatch making its rounds at the Nurburgring.

And it is on this press conference that Honda confirmed the engine for their next Type-R. Powering the hot hatch is a direct injection turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, churning an output of “at least 280 PS (276bhp)”.

Honda will surely use all the available power to the max as they are setting a pretty high benchmark for the next Type-R to achieve; being “the fastest front wheel drive car around the infamous Nurburgring in Germany”.

Can they actually make it; having to battle with tough and tested cars like the Renault Megane RS265? The car for the time being is obviously still in extensive development, with Honda WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini seen in the short Nurburgring video, taking the wheels of the Type-R prototype through the demanding course of the Green Hell. The car still has to face 2 more years in development before going on sale in 2015.

“We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record”, said the President of Honda Motor Europe, Manabu Nishimae.
