Looks like Sebastian Vettel will be having a new teammate next year as his Red Bull comrade Mark Webber is set to enter the challenging world of endurance racing. Confirmed as one of the drivers for Porsche’s LMP1 campaign in the 2014 World Endurance Championship with the 24 Hours of Le Mans being the main highlight, the Australian driver had recently signed a multi-year contract to race with the Stuttgart automaker.
Competing alongside Webber in the brand-new LMP1 race car are two Porsche works drivers Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas. Also coming from the world of F1 is former test driver Neel Jani, who was also confirmed as a part of the squad.
While it is yet to be clear on who will be filling Webber’s place in the Red Bull Racing’s seat, rumours have been running around that the Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen might be switching teams. Also a possibility is fellow Aussie Daniel Ricciardo who is currently racing for the Red Bull Scuderia Torro Rosso.
Mark Webber is no stranger to Le Mans, as he have already raced on the legendary French circuit twice. In 1998, he finished as a runner-up in the FIA GT Championship in a Mercedes-Benz CLR Prototype.
“It’s an honour for me to join Porsche at its return to the top category in Le Mans and in the sports car World Endurance Championship and be part of the team. I’m very much looking forward to this new challenge after my time in F1”, said Webber.
