Aston’s city car is at the end of the line – Say goodbye to the Cygnet?

The Aston Martin Cygnet – also known as a very expensive Toyota iQ which Jeremy Clarkson calls a washing machine on wheels. The Cygnet was built and produced to help Aston Martin in neutralising their average CO2 Emission across their range of cars. The little 1.3-litre Cygnet certainly brought their average down from their fuel guzzling, ‘not-so-environmental-friendly’ 6.0-litre V12s in the Rapide, DBS and V12 Vantage; however, was it really an Aston Martin?

Nevertheless, if you’re looking to buy an Aston Martin Cygnet, you may have some difficulty getting one. Simply because the only Cygnet that you can buy (new) now is what’s left at the showroom. Rumours are spreading that the Cygnet’s production has been ceased and likely will not continue. Aston’s smallest and cheapest car has only been around for 2 years and back in 2011, Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin confirmed that the Cygnet’s yearly production numbers will hit 4000 per annum.

Powered by a microscopic 1.3-litre 4-cylinder, the Cygnet was able to do the Zerotohundred sprint in 11.5 seconds from the 97bhp engine. Sharing many similar body parts of the iQ, Aston Martin’s target market of the Cygnet was their exiting customers who would immediately appreciate Aston’s “commitment to innovation and integrity”.

No confirmation yet from Aston Martin about this rumour, and if they intend on replacing the Cygnet with another city roundabout vehicle. Perhaps something similar or a completely new car from the ground up. However, with Aston’s latest collaboration with Mercedes-AMG, there is a high possibility too that they might move away from the city car business. At least for a while.

We say, please Aston Martin… Get rid of the Cygnet! Thank you!
