The Eight Thousand Litre Heist

Hammond, Indiana was the place in the United States where a rather large oil road-tanker was driven away with a stash of almost 8,000 litres worth of petrol that’s valued at RM15,200 if it were based on our RON95 fuel, but better yet, that sort of petrol cache should keep your vehicle running for up to 3 years. More importantly though, was how it happened.

Recently, BP (renamed as BHP in Malaysia) had contamination issues with their fuel, especially around Hammond, Indiana. A person posing as a tanker driver said he needed to check the station’s fuel level and with the recent contamination issues, it was not unusual for petrol to be pumped from the station’s petrol tank and replaced.

However, the person who posed as a tanker-driver pumped with station’s tank but didn’t fill it back up with a fresh supply, leaving the station well…’high and dry’ so to speak.

How the person managed to get a hold of a BP-looking rig is beyond anyone at the moment but thus far, its been the largest stash to have been reported stolen with other stations in the area reporting up to a 1,325L of petrol having been lost due to pump tampering.
