Without the Sound, Will a Supercar Still Be Superb?

Remember the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive? This latest green supercar released by Mercedes had really impressed us with the numbers, with a reported 740-horsepower and 1,000Nm of torque coming out from its four electric motors. Although the top speed had to be limited to 250km/h, acceleration from 0-100 only takes 3.9 seconds.

So the numbers might already convince one to own one of these chrome-blue, tree-hugging road rockets. But one of the reasons why some are willing to spend a bomb in owning a supercar is the brilliant concerto that the car brings with it. Like the SLS AMG for this case, the raw, husky growl coming out from the 6.2 AMG is just a pure, spine-tingling sound that pleases the owner.

The Electric Drive on the other hand, is a bit spooky; or should one say anti-climatic. While the car is still a scene to behold, it is no longer accompanied by the iconic growl that this German muscle used to carry. But unfortunately that is how all electric cars will sound like as the sound that will mostly be heard is either the whirring coming from the motors or the tires screeching off the tarmac.

Hopefully the engineers responsible for the Formula E racing series in 2014 will come up with something to at least spice up the cars, probably with an artificial soundtrack for the race; like what Audi had done for their future e-tron supercars.
