LAUNCH: Chevrolet Colorado (From RM88,888)

NAZA Quest (Chevrolet Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd introduced the all-new Chevrolet Colorado last night and they’re claiming this pick-up truck to be the toughest and highest-performing mid-sized truck that Chevrolet has ever built.

The launch was graced by Datuk Wira SM Faisal Tan Sri SM Nasimuddin, NAZA Group of Companies Joint Group Executive Chairman; Dato’ SM Zulkifli SM Amin, NAZA Group of Companies Group Chief Operating Officer; Timothy Liauw, representative from General Motors, Datuk Maruan Mohd Said, Chief Operating Officer of NAZA Quest Sdn Bhd and Mr. Martin Apfel, President of General Motors Thailand / SEA & Chevrolet Sales Thailand.

Before the Colorado could be unveiled, it underwent a 5-year product development program that costed USD$2 billion and spanned across five different continents that would allow the Colorado to cater to the needs of customers in 60 different markets around the world.

But for us Malaysians, we’ll be getting three Colorado variants for choice and will be available from April 2012 onwards:

– 2.5L LT Duramax turbo-diesel (5MT Only) – RM88,888

– 2.8L LT Duramax turbo-diesel (5MT Only) – RM93,938

– 2.8L LTX Duramax turbo-diesel (6AT with Shiftronic) – RM103,938

The baseline 2.5L LT Duramax turbo-diesel (XLD25) engine will only come with a 5-speed manual transmission and will be sending 150bhp at 3,800rpm and 350Nm of torque at 2,000rpm to a set of 16” alloy rims wrapped by fat 245/70 Bridgestone Dueller H/T tyres. Fuel economy is rated at a fairly decent 8.4L/100km.

The 2.8L LT Duramax turbo-diesel (XLD28) engine, on the other hand, will produce 180bhp at 3,800rpm and 440Nm of torque at 2,000rpm with a 5-speed manual tranny, but its fuel economy rating is almost similar at just 8.5L/100km

As for the range topping 2.8L LTX, it gets a Shiftronic equipped 6-speed autobox and torque gets bumped up by an additional 30Nm to 470Nm for the 17” alloy rims that gets wrapped by slimmer 255/65 Bridgestone Dueller H/T tyres and will need to be fed 9.7L of diesel for every 100km.

The LTX will possess a plethora of features that includes the likes of the usual driver and front passenger airbags, ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Fuel Tank Shield and Transfer Case Shield. This is inclusive of the Electronic 4WD shift switch  and all of which will be found as standard on both 2.5L and 2.8L LT variants as well.

Extras to be found on the LTX will be the Panic Brake Assist (PBA), Hydraulic Brake Fade Assist (HBFA), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Traction Control System (TCS).

But what is PBA? According to Chevy, it’s a system that monitors the applied pressure of the foot to the brake pedal, which instructs the ABS to engage more quickly, helping to shorten the braking distance in comparison the non-PBA equipped ABS.

CBC on the other hand, helps to control brake-force distribution to all four wheels in order to reduce the likelihood of under or oversteer.

HBFA gets automatically activated should a driver suddenly increase brake pedal pressure for more stopping power, which will cause the program to work in conjunction with the other electronic safety programs in order to help slow the truck down in a more stable manner.

The LTX will also come with folding wing mirrors (integrated with LED turn signals), automatic climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth capability, LED tail lights and projector headlights.

A choice of 5 colours will be made available in Summit White, Royal Grey, Sizzle Red, Auburn Brown, and Black Sapphire.

In terms of warranty, new buyers will get 3 years free labour or 60,000km (or whichever comes first), 3 years warranty or 100,000km (or whichever comes first).
