Volvo S60 all prepped to race in Belgian Touring Car Championship

Volvo has been drastically trying to shed its safe box family car image in favour of a more aggressive image without loosing any of its safety credibility. Take on the gorgeous new S60, its lines are new to the Volvo design language and now its about to get some racing pedigree as well.

The new S60 is set to make its racing debut at this weekends Belgian Touring Car Championship. The racer was designed by the Chinese-owned Swedish automakers Belgian S60 racing team, and shares very little DNA with the car at Volvo dealers worldwide.

The Belgian Touring Car Championship is a high-regulated race series and as a result there is very little deviation between each racer. The cars share a tube chassis, aerodynamic work, front and rear suspension and mechanical bits but that’s about it. The S60 racer gets its power from a standardized 3.5-liter V6 powerplant that puts out 410hp and 412Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox that sends all that power to the rear wheels only.

The S60 will be competing in two 90-minute heats per race, with one 12-hour endurance race. The results should be out in the next few hours as the race is about to get on its way as I type this. Stay tuned.
