Leaked: Some Information On The Next-Generation BMW M5

BMWM5_2011_F10

The 2011 BMW M5 F10 is not scheduled for release till later on in the year, I’m guessing it will be somewhere in the third quarter of the year but thanks to CAR Magazine, we now have some juicy details on the F10 M5. According to them, the new M5 will be 0.3 seconds quicker to the 100km/h mark than the outgoing E60 M5.

The new M5 will also receive a significant boost in power and torque achieved by the clever use of the new 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 engine that replaces the mighty and very lovable 5-liter V10 of the E60 M5. As seen in the X5M and the X6M, the new engine is capable of some pretty fun numbers; 578hp is achievable without a fuss while torque figures in the new M5 increases by 40% from 380lb-ft to 531lb-ft (!!).

The good thing about the new car is that even with improved performance, fuel consumption is down by 30% while emissions are also reduced by the same figure. This was achieved using clever weight management techniques and the use of the Bavarian company’s Efficient Dynamics System. What is really exciting is that the new M5 may even use a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), developed by the company’s ex-Formula One program.

Apparently the new M5 is capable of a top speed of 303km/h with the speed limiter removed. But with all good news comes some bad news, and this time it’s the fans of wagons/estates/avant/touring models that loose out because word is that there will not be a M5 Touring variant of the new car. We will still have to wait till the end of 2010 for the final details, for now this is all we know.
