Some Details On The 2011 BMW M1

January 8, 2010

Word has it that BMW is working on a hardcore version of it’s 1 Series Coupe and it’s currently being developed by no other than the company’s legendary M-Technik division. It’s reportedly under development for a UK release in mid-2011. If true, the car will be positioned beneath the M3 Coupe and is said to feature a modified twin-turbocharged six-cylinder powerplant which could be good for 350hp.

The aluminium engine will be mated to a standard six-speed dual-clutch gearbox with an electronically-controlled rear M differential. As all M cars are a lighter faster version of the car’s they are based on, the so-called “M1″ will weigh in at just over 1500kg; not your average lightweight beemer but apparently it will breeze past 100km/h in well under five seconds.

According to our sources, the M1 will retain the standard MacPherson struts up front and the multi-link rear set up, but predictably, the M engineers will fit it with firmer springs, dampers and bushings to improve handling. Aesthetically, the M1 can be differentiated from the regular model by a new body kit that features a new front spoiler, flared wheel arches, larger side sills, a rear spoiler and an aggressive rear valance with quad M-signature chrome exhaust tips.

With so much already known about the car, it’s eventual existence could just be confirmed soon, in fact we have learnt that the only set back BMW is facing is the name. The M1 label actually belongs to the company’s legendary road supercar of the late 70s, so with such a historic relevance, BMW’s hesitance is quite understandable. But whatever they call it, expect it to be a cracker of an entry-level M model.

no no no, this ugly one is going to be the new M1?
personally, it’s the ugliest car in the BMW stable, and it’s going to take over the legendary M1?

Topgear reported there would never be an M1. Because the M1 is reserved for their supercar. I would say 1 series CSL would be more apt.

This looks like proton BLM from far.
