Ultra-successful world rally driver Sebastien Loeb has reportedly made an approach to the new-for-2010 USF1 team.

“Somebody representing Loeb called us but I won’t give details of the conversation,” sporting director Peter Windsor is quoted as telling the French sports daily L’Equipe.

Ever since Loeb, 35, tested Red Bull’s F1 car over the winter, his rising interest in a more serious foray has been rumoured, including recently putting his name forward as Sebastien Bourdais’ Toro Rosso replacement.

Windsor added: “He is an incredible talent and he would definitely make things interesting in F1. We are looking more on the American side but are going to take him seriously.”

Loeb also confirmed the USF1 approach to L’Equipe.
“I wanted to know if a team was really interested in me for F1. Someone contacted this new team but I don’t know what happened.

“I am enjoying myself in the WRC and am on the verge of extending my contract with Citroen. But if I get the opportunity to do a couple of races in 2010 when the calendars don’t clash then why not?”

I guess one more driver named Sebastien in F1 wouldn't hurt:) RBR/STR had THREE Sebastians :) until Bourdais got the can.

I would love to see Loeb join RBR/STR instead of USF1 so that they're back up to 3 and then find another Sebastian out there good enough to replace Webber. They can then hit Guinness World Records for being the team with the most number of 'Sebastians' LOL

I think Loeb has the competitive edge. He needs to be well prepared physically for F1 and therefore needs to do as much testing as he can in single seaters. I think he should be allowed to join a lower formula like GP2 first to show his mettle and get used to the unique physical demands expected.

Loeb is capable to handle the single seater. He still race at Le Mans, and he can use that experience.

He has not done a full race weekend in F1 which is very physically demanding. Even before Sunday arrives his body would already be reacting to the stress. Thats why getting used to the usual 3day track sesssions format of single seaters is important. Talent alone is not enough in F1. he needs to be physically toned on top of being generally fit (cardio). Single seater requires high demand of specific muscles especially the neck and upper body.

Le Mans is different. It's not about outright speed. Driver doesn't endure constant 4-5 lateral gs

I'm not saying he can't do it but a lot physical preparation is required to get through a race weekend and stay in peak form. he has so far only done testing

He's fit, don't worry. The guy has a team of fitness instructors, physicians and dietition taking care of him full time. At that level of motorsports, they all do...

He is of course 'fit' in terms of physical fitness, cardio etc. But single seater racing demands more from the body especially the neck muscles. You cannot tone those muscles and certain other muscles properly in the gym. This is what I'm pointing out in my post earlier.

The only way to properly tone those muscles is to actually go drive single seaters and do the full 3 day race weekends. Testing is limited in F1 so thats why I said he should do lower series first like GP2 first, at least a few rounds first.

I always get skeptical when the media likes to shout such stories about non-f1 athletes jumping directly into an F1 car. Can anyone remember when the last time someone actually did that? NEVER. There is a reason why it is so.

Loeb, Rossi are all highly competitive sportsman. They can be competitive in the car for short periods but STAYING in peak for a whole race weekend (Friday, Saturday Sunday) takes experience and real track time in single seaters. There are no magic shortcuts. Talent alone isn't enough.

FIA evaluates eligibility for superlicense very strictly for such reasons as it relates to safety. I reiterate that he should do lower series first to prove to everyone and to himself that he can cut it. Otherwise it puts the sport of F1 into further disrepute. The F1 media circus always likes to feed the public with these kinds of stories.
