Mclaren At Le Mans 1995: Pursuit of Perfection

The video above is part 1 of a four part series which are available after jump. If you have 40 minutes to kill, then this is the best way to do it as the video shows the Mclaren’s inaugural run at the 1995 Le Mans. The Mclaren F1 took the world by storm when it was first introduced in the early 90’s, now nearly two decades later, it is still considered the ultimate roadcar with an engineering feat no other supercar manufacturer has rivaled. It took the quad-turbocharged Veyron to beat the naturally aspirated Mclaren and even then, the Mclaren is much quicker on track.

The Mclaren F1 has won generations of admirers and will continue to win generations more as its no-compromise philosophy will be hard to implement today with stringent safety standards and emission controls. Here’s a four part series celebrating the Mclaren F1, Gordon Murray talks us through the technology behind it and a racing legend much ahead of it’s time.

A1Diablo,

remember the "Top Gear: Veyron vs McLaren F1" video feature thread in ZTH. In where u mentioned that the mcLaren was meant as a racecar. However, I mentioned, that Gordon Murray & McLaren never intended the F1 to be a race car.

Well, in the first video, you can hear the word from the man himself, about 4 mins in.

cheers

Faisal,

I'm trying to find the posting I made as I can't remember the exact words I used though I think I know what I meant. ZTH lost data recently so I guess that got lost too. As Gordon Murray put it the Macca was inspired from their F1 race car and it was meant to be an uncompromising, ultimate sports car, and as you rightfully pointed out not intended for race tracks. Still, it is night and day compared to the Veyron.

James Robinson (4:20, part1) looks a lot younger and 'cleaner' then. He is the race engineer for the current Swiss A1GP team.

Anyway, over here we're planning to go back to Le Mans next year, this time with some significant Malaysian involvement. I wonder if that sounds exciting to local racing buffs.
