KTM Hit By Global Econimic Crisis as Production of the X-Bow Comes To A Halt

The KTM X-Bow created waves around the world when it was first introduced a year ago. Touted as one of the most extreme track machines built by a reputable Austrian motorcycle manufacturer, the X-Bow was destined for track glory but that was short lived as production of X-Bow has officially halted.

The Austrian manufacturer initially planned to build around 100 X-Bows a year but the global economic crisis has hit the pricey track toy after having sold fewer cars than expected.

500 X-Bows have been built so far with 80 still unsold, due to this, production at KTM’s Graz facility has halted though production is slated to resume in January 2010.

At launch KTM had hoped that the UK would be one of it’s strongest markets but despite plenty of critical acclaim, the KTM hasn’t sold all that well in the UK with only 23 examples registered so far. It’s sad to see such an incredible machine meet a sorry end but there’s still hope that in the next few month’s KTM will be able to shift the remaining 80 models and production will continue in five months time.

The KTM X-Bow is powered by a TFSI engine provided by the VW Group and it’s power figures stand at 237 hp available at 5,500 rpm and 310Nm of torque between 2,200 and 5,500 rpm. If you don’t think much of that, remember that the X-Bow weighs in at only 700kgs and has competed in the Supersport category of the 2008 FIA GT4 Championship taking a podium finish at Monza and a pole position in the wet qualifying session at Nogaro.

The carbon tubbed X-Bow is too expensive and its power-to-weight ratio is too little compared to the much cheaper and more effective Catherham R500.

Thats why it ain't selling on Catherham home turf.
