Ferrari SUV To Debut Next Year?

ferrari-suv-artist-renderings_1

A Ferrari SUV might take some getting used to. The idea has been around for some years and this is the freshest artist rendition. It’s an SUV by the definition of a vehicle with four doors, raised ride height, mostly fitted with a 4WD system and takes the shape of a station wagon/ tourer.

The vehicle with the codename “Ferrari FS 599 Fuoristrada” will be constructed out of aluminium and carbon fiber composites for weight-efficiency. Engines come from the naturally aspirated V8 found in the California and the 599 GTB’s V12 powerplant. They produce in excess of 400hp and 600hp each respectively. While the latter’s figure seems slightly excessive, Ferrari will not manufacture an SUV that will deliver average performance. It has to be the most powerful and by extension the fastest around.

ferrari-suv-artist-renderings

Renderings of a Ferrari SUV have appeared before based on speculation that the Italian company was working on its first ever SUV. At the time Porsche was riding high with the great success of its Cayenne and premium brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW had been building MLs and X5s for years before.

The Ferrari on high boots had been slated for a 2010 Geneva Motor Show debut but as things stand in the world economy there’s no clear direction as to whether the project is still going ahead or not. With the recent announcement of an alliance with Ferrari parent Fiat and Chrysler LLC of America new possibilities have arisen. Such possibilities include a common SUV platform that can be shared with Jeep, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari itself. Product assembly could even be in the US just like Mercedes with the old ML and BMW with the X5 and X6.

Probably governement contractors.. lol.
Personally, SUV isn't my cup of tea.. But I guess it's normal for almost every car manufacturer to venture into the SUV market.

I'm trying to imagine a Lamborghini SUV.. Hmmmm.. Would be interesting to see..

I prefer 4 door supercars to SUV by supercar manufacturers anytime anyday. A M5 is more tempting than the ML63 AMG or even the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

The only explanation to the popularity of SUV is perhaps the psychological advantage it gives to the owners (whether or not such rich people have an ego deficiency complex is a subject of no small scholarly debate). You are riding high, lording over all other motorist.

Or as Jeremy Clarkson once quoted "in a head on collision you are better off in an SUV......SUVs are like nuclear weapons, when somebody has it then by God we should all have one just to be safe."

Ferrari is probably jealous of Porsche's success with the Cayenne. But the Ferrari is missing out the fact that the Cayenne is the cheapest of the Porsche range, and despite its looks and its connection to a 'performance' brand, it is a very capable off road car (not that those who splashed the money is looking forward to go on a jungle trek). This is because the Cayenne is based/jointly developed on the Volkswagen Touareg. Which makes the development and production cost of the Cayenne much lower.

So who is Ferrari going to partner with if they were to make a capable off roader that is cheap enough to challenge the Cayenne? As far as I know the only people that is making 4wd mechanics that is related to Ferrari is their distant forgotten cousin, Alfa Romeo (forget the Fiat Panda 4x4 and the Fiat Sedici which is related to a Suzuki). And even they (Alfa) can't get a 4wd sedan right.

And even if they join with Chrysler? Good god helps us all. Besides Chrysler doesn't build any SUVs for the export market.

Doubt Ferrari could actually pull this off. As of now there is still more demand for their supercars than they can manufacture.

PS: If you have not driven a heavy fast car, the feeling of a huge mass traveling down the horizon is incredible. Probably thats the only reason sports SUVs exist.

Lamborghini did build the granddaddy of SUVs, the Lamborghini LM002 built in the early 80s and bought by the rich oil sheikhs from the mid-east. It had a V12 Countach engine.

Hause,

Are u kidding me??Cayenne a very capable off road car??U must be getting paid by Porsche to be saying that...A Mitsu Pajero would definitely beat any Cayenne hands down in any off road, jungle tracking competition!A Mitsu Pajero is proper off road car..not a Cayenne..Owners of Cayenne are nothing but spoilt rich people who doesnt wat to do with their money!

i think this is not going to happen

last time i heard luca di montezemolo (spelling?) said Ferrari will never make a 4-door car, just to follow the trend being set by other manufacturers

Yes he said they'll never make a 4 door (sports) car. He didn't say anything about not making an SUV.

It likelihood they are thinking it. It would be understandable for them to even build a concept SUV and unveil it. Whether it goes into production would be something else.

This is my point. Even though this picture makes it look like a Range Rover sports coupe, but its a 4 foor SUV. So ferrari did say they will never make a 4 door car. But not a 4 door SUV? An SUV is also a car. It makes it look like there are 2 camps inside ferrari. One a traditionalist and the other a forward thinker. In the end who wins? My bet is the guy who can come up with facts and figures and why a 4 door ferrari SUV or sallon should exist.

Its not me who claim that the Cayenne is a capable off road SUV. It is the general consensus of all motoring magazines. The Touerag platform makes it capable off road, perhaps not capable of going into the deep jungle, but still capable of going off road.

Btw there are more Lamborghini tractors in existence than there are Lamborghini cars.

Yep I knew the tractor story of Mr Lamborghini but I haven't actually seen a Lamborghini tractor before.

N Lamborghini did have a SUV. The LM004. 7.3l V12, 4WD. A monster of a SUV.

Lamborghini tractors today have no relation to Automobili Lamborghini, the car maker. Though both were started by Ferruccio Lamborghini. Ferruccio was an entrepreneur. His main biz was tractors but he also manufatured air conditioners and almost went into helicopters. He started Lamborghini cars later later just to spite Ferrari. Lamborghinis of the 60s to me are a beautiful works of art and were tecnologically better than Ferrari GT cars of the day.

Ferrari I think cannot ignore the lure(profits) of the SUV market. They need to grow. Lamborghini recognizes this market as well.

The Cayenne is a very capable off roader when pitted against SUVs like X5, Touareg, Q5 etc. More thought was put into the Cayenne to go off road compared to the said models.

However they are no where as capable as Pajero, Land Rover etc. These are the serious off roaders

Sorry but i strongly disagree. I have driven the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo on road and they handle better than any SUV out there. In fact they don't feel like SUVs but instead more like sportscars.. on stilts. I have driven the Cayenne S hard through winding roads towards Cameron Highlands
