Toyota FT-86 Testing At The Ring – Sounds Good, Looks Fast

October 20, 2009

Here’s a video of the FT-86 testing at the Nurburgring, and judging from the sound and the way it runs, it could just live up to expectations. It’s not clear whether the car in the video is the Toyota or Subaru version but considering the two won’t differ much, expect the duo to be quite similar. And if Toyota’s version does really go like the car in the video, then Toyota will truly be able to say its back in the business of fun.

  1. LOL says:

doesnt even look like the concept car for abit

  2. savahn says:

Its camouflaged. That’s standard op for new cars.

Can see that the dampers are quite soft and bouncy, making it quite bouncy in corners. It would be very comfortable on normal roads though. Hope they make the damper rate a little more firm before release.

  3. td says:

well yea, but once its launched, im sure those new owners will fit ‘em with aftermarket shocks. its a JDM monsta! =)

  4. JuzTin says:

    Looks fast, but fugly.
But 1 thing for sure, it’s a powerful monster.

  5. PocketRocket says:

    looks like a brick

  6. V99 says:

they should re-design the rear and the body..doesnt look like a fast car to me

  7. pokemon says:

whoa…now all new japanese cars must test at the ring ahh??

    following the GTR tradition?

  8. teo1957 says:

If it’s a spiritual successor to AE86 Levin Trueno, then is there a basic, wallet-friendly version to it? Is the basic version an Altis?

If it’s a standalone, performance model, then it will be priced like a performance car.

Then it will not be an ordinary Joe’s underdog sport car.

Wondering how the price is gonna be like: if UMW sells it, will it fetch RM19xk like the FD2R and become Richie Rich’s toy?

  9. netmatrix says:

UMW has a history of not selling coupe cars at all. They never sold the Celica or Supra before. Last bet is UMW selling such cars. The better bet is Naza. Would probably cost less than 20K. If they do sell it more than 200K then its ISxxx category already. No one would want.

  10. teo1957 says:

    Good point there bro.

However, if it sells for RM150k oso, people will think twice. Lotsa good cars can be bought with that kinda price.

But what is rich man’s price in Malaysia, is kid’s play elsewhere.

  11. taboogen says:

this is testing phase,, they will definately retune the abs and the springs… and the best part about japenese car…. the aftermarket part is just a few days away after launching

  12. LOL says:

just look at the shape of this car..doesnt even worth 50k to me..lol

  13. eddz says:

    teo1957

if it IS selling for RM150k, ppl like me wud think more than twice haha..

150k i’ll go fer a modded altezza, and still have some more fer a kancil turbo! wohoo.. !

  14. teo1957 says:

    eddz,

True bro, the pricing IN MALAYSIA (my emphasis) will determine this model’s success IN MALAYSIA.

Need I emphasise again, that if it’s priced RM150k here, it maybe priced RM80k elsewhere.

Just look at Mitsubishi Evo: here they’re treated like rolling gold bars, then you start checking out overseas forums and mags and you get a reality check: you see kids barely out of school tinkering with Evos in their home garages.

But whatever the pricing will be, I doubt that it will become an ordinary Joe’s giant-slaying sport car, like what the AE86 Levin Trueno is.

The same RWD coupe layout maybe, but so much for being a SPIRITual successor.

  15. Joshua says:

Well someone has actually teach me a thing or two about prototype. This is actually a DONOR car. The stretch or build a mock top place on a donor car. It will not look anything like this. This procedure is to test the ENGINE on a chasis lenght they might want to use. The lenght of the car is same but the end production will be different. But rest assure this will be the engine they will be using.

  16. Joshua says:

Oh btw souces say this car will be in production below USD 30k. So cross our finger and see how much they sell it here.

  17. skyancient says:

some how looks like a joint car to me.. the driver cockpit & the rear end just don blends well…

  18. AE80TypeD says:

it wont be the regular joe’s everyday sports car in terms of pricing. im pretty sure it will be difficult or totally out of reach for middle class ppl like me :( . any hope of AFTA kicking in before 2012? hahaha.

  19. Joshua says:

I think we might get a chance to have our hands on this car as most likely this car will be build in Thailand by Toyota to reduce the cost and its in our AFTA region. Look at the sillycar .. i meant celica that is flooding our market. I have seen some as cheap as 80k to 90k for ZZ. Anyways keep our finger cross guys… skyancient …that is what a DONOR car is. :D
