2009 Macau Grand Prix – The Highlights
November 29, 2009

The legendary Macau Grand Prix is one of those races where World Champions are made. Famous winners at the Grand Prix include Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen among many others. Held at the 6.2km Guia Circuit, the Grand Prix is held in November every year and because it takes place after the end of the Formula One season, many top Formula One drivers compete as well.
Held on the streets of Macau, the GP is also the only street circuit racing event in the world that hosts a car and motorcycle in one race weekend. The circuit is dauntingly narrow and coupled with its tight corners, there have been incidences where racers pay the ultimate price. This combination ensures the race is filled with drama, excitement and plenty of nail biting moments. So that’s why the Macau GP is one of those races that every adrenalin loving petrol head should attend, including us. But sadly, this isn’t about us attending the race cause we didn’t but rather a good friend did. Wei Li is a known motorsports photographer and these are his shots from the 2009 Macau Grand Prix.

ouch.. broken rims.. that’s bad..
how did our Bufori do? Heard that our Mr JP Chin was also there with a few integras.. did they finish?
Wasn’t aware that Chin was there but I wouldn’t be surprised.

mario thiessen was there as well. BMW raced there officially?
There was malaysian driver in formula bmw as well, but ended in accident..too pity.
most focus were on the road car challenge while the road cars can have unlimited modifications to compete in 3 cats.
the R35GTR supposed to give the last year champion EVO a good chase but it was crashed at the very first corner after a poor start…
There were actually FIVE malaysian drivers in the FBMW Pacific. From Team Holzer PFX was Dominic Ang, Calvin Wong, Muhd Alif Jafri. There was also Aaron Lim’s protege Fahmi Ilyas from E-rain racing while Jazeman Jaafar drove for Raikkonen-Robertson.
Eyes are usually on Fahmi and Jazeman and probably Calvin too.
Among them Jazeman qualified the highest in 5th but crashed during the race. Fahmi ran up to 4th in the race but then had a puncture finishing 9th. Fahmi was the only Malaysian to have finished the race.
I personally thought Calvin’s 2nd corner stunt was darn silly…. and triggering a pileup in the Formula BMW race. Really lack of maturity in his driving.
Still a good race to watch but this year’s coverage was not so good on Astro Starsports…… Delayed telecast with the exception of Eurosport which featured WTCC.
I recalled last time they used to feature more races like the Porsche races and their wacky local races with their scooters, saloon cars and classic cars (good fun to watch).
But the biggest shock this year and correct me if I’m wrong is to see the marshalls dragging out poor Engstler out of the mangled BMW….. Really bad luck for him this year.
Yeah poor Engstler. He seems to be getting into nasty crashes at Macau lately through no fault of his own. Hope he is alright.
infact, i was there with lots gals and car picture…
All Malaysian gang are hardly fight with those macau and hk guys, grp n car vs super 2000….how to race..
GTR R35 can’t stop the car and bang the wall, u know y, hehe…
