ProDrive Plans To Purchase Honda F1 Team And Return To F1 Racing

honda-0

ProDrive owner David Richards has revealed he has turned his focus on a potential return to Formula One racing after Subaru announced its withdrawal from the World Rally Championship three days ago.

With Richards allegedly eyeing the purchase of Honda’s F1 team, he told the British newspaper The Sun that this week’s developments “clears the decks and gives me a bit of spare time to think about it.”

“The new structure for F1 from 2010 onwards, with new regulations coming and very significant cost cutting programmes, certainly make it more appealing and far more suitable for a company such as ours,” he added.

“What’s on the table today makes it far more feasible.”

Richards, who formerly ran the Benetton and BAR teams, almost brought Prodrive into F1 this year with a McLaren Mercedes technical package but balked at the ‘customer car’ situation.

At this stage the chassis and engine for 2009 is already in advanced development stage. Honda will probably produce rocket engines if someone asked and are willing to PAY for it.

However this is good news. However i hope the 2009 Honda developed package is competitive else Prodrive will run at the back and have to forget about results for 2009 and focus on 2010 car.

Prodrive is a tuning company, its not just about subaru. Subaru's tuning arm is STI. Prodrive is a partner for their WRC exploits.

F1 is supposed to use a standard engine. So VTEC unit is highly unlikely. Unless Honda is the developer of the standard engine, which doesn't seem to be so at the moment.

Cosworth used to be associated with FORD. hahaha. Ford in F1?

The 3 engine options offered by FIA for F1 are:
1.Standard engine (cosworth)
2.Own new engine but cannot exceed specs of the std engine
3.Current engine with parity (restrictions) in place.

So Prodrive if confirmed to buy the team, can still run the Honda engine. Anyway the changes above are for 2010 season onwards

So the question: what's with the Aston Martin deal now? If they run Honda they'll have a whole car, no need to bulid from scratch...

If they buy the ex-Honda team they can technically rename it anyhing they like. They can call it 'Prodrive F1', 'RACING R US' or since they own Aston Martin, possibly use that brand too if beneficial to them.
