20070523_rs_esc_event_rome2Around 95% of all accidents are due to pure drivers misjudgments and mistakes. Electronic stability control (ESC/DSC/ESP/CST/VSA/ASC/PSM/whatever equivalent) is a computerized technology that improves the safety of a vehicle’s handling by detecting and preventing skids.

“It is the most effective safety device since the seatbelt” – Euro NCAP-

When ESC detects loss of steering control, ESC automatically applies individual brakes to help “steer” the vehicle where the driver wants to go. Some ESC systems also reduce engine power until control is regained.

Studies revealed that Proton and Lotus were the worst culprits, with neither offering the set-up on any of their models – even as an option.

Chevrolet was next on the league table, with ESC standard on none of its European cars and optional on only one-third of its range. Fiat, Suzuki and Daihatsu followed, with less than 30 per cent of their models having the device fitted.
