Mercedes To Pursue Mclaren Buy Out?
July 24, 2008
We have heard this many times before and yet the rumours continue but the partnership between Mclaren and Mercedes has remained just that, a partnership. German auto giants, Mercedes who currently own 40% equity in Mclaren, have continuously downplayed the suggestion that they were to make a move to buy out Mclaren after 12 years of collaboration but things may take a turn in the next few months or maybe even years.
Mclaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh in speaking with the International Herald-Tribune indicated that he would be deeply disturbed if Mercedes were not to make a move to acquire the British racing team. He commented, ” I would be deeply disturbed if Mercedes had no real interest in acquiring us. I think it’s a tangible demonstration of their commitment to this”.
Mercedes will have to acquire the remaining 60% to own Mclaren or 10.1% to gain controlling interest in the legendary racing team that fielded such legendary racers like Ayrton Senna, Niki Lauda, Alain Prost and Mika Hakkinen. Some believe the acquisition may come at a odd timing as both companies have choosen to part ways in building a successor to the Mercedes SLR and the legendary Mclaren F1.
